The year 2023 marks 45 years of the NMS Camps division supporting efforts on Alaska’s North Slope. The partnership began with British Petroleum in 1978 when NMS began offering food services on the North Slope, and over time, the service offerings grew.

What exactly does “camps” mean at NMS? Camps is a term for temporary housing for rotational workers in all remote worksites in Alaska. NMS provides complete camp management services at multiple permanent and temporary camps in Prudhoe Bay, Red Dog Mine and other remote work sites. Services include housekeeping, janitorial, food service, maintenance, laundry, commissary, security and billeting.

Our crews focus on providing quality services that keep the camps clean, safe and comfortable for the long work hours. NMS also strives to support the culture and environment. NMS helps promote and support a comfortable lifestyle in each of the camps. They provide excellent customer service and special events for community engagement opportunities. Whether you are working for NMS or with our partners, the environment in remote camps is structured to help employees be as comfortable as possible. Many campsites have fantastic amenities like movie theaters, spike rooms, reading rooms, athletic facilities and recreation rooms. Some even have swimming pools.
Like our clients, employees within an NMS Camp Services group work rotational shifts, typically two or three weeks on, alternating with a corresponding number of weeks off, referred to as “R and R” (rest and relaxation). The days are long, with 12-hour workdays the norm – but keep in mind, time after the eight-hour shift is considered overtime, and most remote workers earn the same salary in half the time. Most positions have a fellow employee working the alternating rotation of two weeks on and two weeks off called “alternates.” It’s a unique lifestyle that requires the right temperament and flexible attitude about work and personal life. As an employee, all transportation to the job site, meals and accommodations are covered by NMS.
