Raised in Kotzebue, Alaska, Arthur Roy Fields III, or “Umiviik” as he’s known, has a name that carries deep significance. In the Iñupiaq language, “Umiviik” means a place where boats are built—fitting for someone so dedicated to building safe and secure environments. Art has family ties to the Pribilof Islands through his mother and values the connection to both regions. Now, with two young boys, he enjoys being closer to home, spending more time with family, and continuing to invest in his community.
Art’s journey with NMS began 20 years ago when he started as a security intern in Prudhoe Bay. Driven by a passion for helping others, he trained as an EMT and eventually joined the medical team, taking on various roles and responsibilities at NMS sites across Alaska. His most recent position was at Endicott Mine, where he gained extensive hands-on experience working in high-risk environments.
In September 2023, Art transitioned into the Anchorage Health, Safety, Security, and Environmental (HSSE) Department as a Safety Specialist. In this new role, he is responsible for the safety and care of NMS units and sites throughout Alaska, drawing on his diverse background in security, medical response, and safety. Art is eager to connect with team members across the state, listening to their experiences and learning more about their lives both on and off the job.
