Penny Cotten

Vice President of Marketing Communications

Penny Cotten has served as Vice President of Marketing Communications since 2008. As Vice President of Marketing Communications, Cotten provides strategic direction for marketing communications for NMS and its 5 operating divisions. Cotten is responsible for NMS brand management, marketing, public relations, proposal support and community outreach programs including charitable contributions.

Cotten started her career with NMS in 1998 as the Director of Marketing & Sales for the Lodging division.  As director, Cotten was responsible for creating and implementing market plans to increase revenue and maximize occupancy. During her time as Director of Marketing and Sales for the Lodging division, Cotten was responsible for the opening of two hotels, one in Anchorage and one in Fairbanks.  Along with building a new department, Cotten and her team consistently maintained revpar and occupancy levels for the division that exceeded competitors annually by 20%.

In 2002 Cotten was promoted to Director of Marketing Communications for NMS and given responsibility for oversight of marketing communications for all five operating divisions of NMS. As director, Cotten introduced several company-wide programs including the Spirit of the Hunter employee newsletter, which reaches all 2000+ employees, and the company’s Service Recognition program, which recognizes employees for their service to NMS.

Penny’s previous work history includes sales and marketing positions at Xerox, Unisys and Northwest Airlines. She has a BA in social sciences from Alaska Methodist University, and post baccalaureate studies in business administration from the University of Oregon.
